Windows shutdown problems

I have started having an occasional problem with my computer when I shut it down. Sometimes it begins the shutdown process and then suddenly cuts out. The monitor shows a message to say that there is no signal from the computer. When I next start the PC it reports that Windows did not close down properly and then runs ScanDisk. This is annoying. Is it possible one of my Windows files is corrupt and causing the problem? If so, why does it not happen every time I close Windows?

There are so many apparent causes of Windows shutdown problems (and an even greater number of suggested cures) that it is impossible to cover all the possibilities here. Instead, we suggest that you go to the Microsoft website at http://support.microsoft.com/ and search for the Knowledgebase articles relating to your version of Windows with 'shutdown' in the title. In particular, article Q202633 (for Windows 98) or Q238096 (for Windows 98 SE) would be good ones to download, print out and work through. See tip Where are Microsoft's knowledgebase articles?

One thing it's worth trying first, however, would be to disable fast shutdown. To do this, launch the System Configuration Utility (Start, Run, type msconfig, hit Enter) and on the General page click the Advanced button. Check the box captioned 'Disable fast shutdown' and click ok. This may solve the problem.
